Poppies (I think), pizza substitute and give-away

- Poppies? I'm not sure. The one on the right looks like a poppy, but the one on the left looks a bit like a carnation. Photo taken from a neighbor's garden. When I see this flower, I always hear the Wicked Witch of the West in my head saying, "Paaaah-pees" when she throws them in front of Dorothy and crew to make them sleep in that field in the land of Oz.

- Watching a friend dig into a salad loaded with pizza toppings: shredded mozzarella cheese, green olives and mushrooms. There is red sauce on the side. When questioned, she reminds me that she is allergic to gluten, so this is the closest she can come to having pizza. She tops each bite of salad with a little pizza sauce.

- "Paris : distribution gratuite de concombres et de tomates." This is why it is so much fun to be facebook friends with American in Paris, David Lebovitz: his wall post this morning gives notice of "Free give-away this Saturday of cucumbers and tomatoes on the Champ de Mars in Paris (bring football padding to deal with the crowds!)" I guess!

The one on the right is a poppy. Our neighbor has them galore and I always wonder if they are manufacturing opium.

I saw a recipe the other day for Pizza Chili. You make it like chili but all the ingredients are pizza ingredients. It actually sounded pretty good.

I am guessing that you speak French?

I wish I spoke french and bought tomatoes in Paris. I think they are poppies, both of them...

Sounds like there might be a safer way to procure vegetables!

The one on the right is definitely a poppy - which are so lovely and delicate and the one on the left does look like a carnation. I always forget about opium of the poppy.

I like that your friend found a way to enjoy the elements of pizza and probably much healthier than the one we had last night! :)

That kind of poppy always makes me think of the gorgeous ones Georgia o'Keefe painted.

I think one can get gluten-free crust at some restaurants, maybe? Probably. lots of gluten-free this and that today.

A tout a l'heure, Cherie!!

The flower on the left sure looks like a poppy too - the base of the petals is the same as the base on the others - appears to be the same seed pod/bud as the others. Maybe that one is on steroids!

Yes, poppies, both. :) One of them is kind of finished, though, and getting a bit shredded by the weather. (You can be sure they are all poppies by checking out the distinctive seedheads.)

I love the idea of a pizza salad to go gluten-free. Your friend sounds very creative!

So glad to see your lovely posting, Lynn. I'm sorry to have been so busy for a while that blog check-in is out of the question. Hope you're having a glorious summer!

I am always hungry after reading your blog! (Because of the pizza salad, not the flowers. Although some are edible.)

Pizza salad, eh? That's a good idea.

There's a restaurant in Toronto called Il Fornello that offers gluten-free pizza crust. (I haven't tried it.)

Oooooh so gorgeous.
If I had a teensy (lot) bit more talent, I'd Sharpie that picture...

Beautiful poppies...or poppy! Pizza sauce on salad doesn't sound appetizing but with all the other toppings it might taste more like a taco salad than pizza...which is yummy. Love taco salad!

Free cucumbers and tomatoes? I like the sound of that, especially the tomatoes! :)

I can't imagine what a pain it must be to be allergic to gluten. That's practically everything!

Ellis -

That would be far to go for a tomato. :) I just thought that was a funny story - I never think of Parisians eating cucumbers and tomatoes.

Thank you for my poem!

Annie -

I don't speak French really - just a few words. That blogger is one of my favorites.

Pizza Chili sounds kind of good! My sister makes a pizza casserole that her kids like - pepperoni, tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese.

happygirl -

Me, too. Thanks for the identification.

Sage -

I know!

Talon -

I ended up having pizza at lunch yesterday - I was craving it. :)

Jannie, chéri -

I like that O'Keefe painting of poppies, too.

We are even serving gluten free bread at church communion.

xo

Kenju -

Thank you - I knew you guys would know what it was!

Meredith -

Hey there, my friend - I have missed you. Thank you for the info on that "shredded" poppy!

I hope you'll catch us up on your blog soon.

Riot Kitty -

I had a cocktail with edible flowers floating in it not long ago. It was beautiful.

Sparkling Red -

That's right - you are gluten free, too. I had forgotten that.

Pretty flowers. I haven't had popppies in a couple years here. The old seeds didn't sprout this year-
I've actually made pizza dough out of oat n rice flour, but it tasted very strange! I wonder if cornmeal would work...
Free veggies? Here it would definately be a riot with the high prices recently!
