Unleaving, roses and a wee tree

 - The leaves have mostly fallen by now, but I'm seeing these beautiful red maple leaves around.

 - Neighbor Marion's Knock Out roses are still cheerfully blooming in spite of a couple of hard frosts.

- And I finally decorated inside for Christmas.  This wee tree is just the ticket for a single lady.  The Santa on the left belonged to my Great Aunt Grace and the Santa candy dish makes just the holding spot for my charging cellphone.  :)

Those roses aren't just pretty faces...they're tough! ;-)

We don't have any beautiful maple leaves around here. But our goats love the crunchy brown ones that are everywhere. It is joyful to watch them snack.

I never knew roses would continue to bloom after even one frost, much less after "a couple".

You and I have the same tree in the same place in our home. Mine holds the favorite family ornaments from times gone by. I still have my childhood ornament of Santa Claus that was mine to place on the tree each year. Mother saw that we each got to hang our own ornament and then go away so she could finish decorating it the way she wanted. LOL

Love that little tree, Lynn! It's so cute! I used to make small trees (decorate them with lights and ornaments permanently, with small amounts of hot glue to hold things on) for my family members. My Mother still puts up a tree with red blows (a small tree like yours) that I made for them about 15 years ago!(or so!)

I think a well done miniature has just as much to offer as any size tree.

I like the zero calorie approach for phone charging, Lynn :)

I love the colors of the maples in the autumn and wish they could always be so vivid though I'd probably get bored of them so maybe it's good it's only once a year. :)

Your wee tree is lovely!

I know - maybe that's how they got that name - Knock Out. :) You can't knock them out.

My title "unleaving" comes from a very sad poem by Gerard Manly Hopkins called "To a young child." I thought the poets in the crowd might be interested in that.

Granny Annie -

These red leaves are oddly not decayed like falling leaves usually are.

Those knock out roses are hardy!

I actually have enough ornaments for a full sized tree, but I spend Christmas out of state with my family, so this little one is good.

That's a nice memory of your mom.

I'm glad you like it. And that sounds like a fun project.!

lol! Exactly - that's its usual charging spot so it worked out well. :)

Love those red leaves, too.

Ah, what a great iPhone spot! And the tree is so cute. Very nice ambiance.

Wow -- nice roses. Ours bloomed again profusely lately too. Now the frost has them bowing their heads and going to sleep until the next wild surprise of them hits.

Noticed quite a lot of maple leaves here too, on a walk to the park to see Santa with Kelly yesterday. So... Canadian!! :)

WOW that leaf is a knockout! I love leaves in the fall. Each one is a work of art.

Thanks to the art of my late father-in-law, I am now seeing bare trees differently. I used to perceive them as almost-dead, depressingly scratchy things. Now I see amazingly intricate, gorgeous sculptural shapes, each one different and beautiful.

I love Gerard Manley Hopkins. "God's Grandeur" is my favorite.

Jannie -

Yes - those red maple leaves are like a gift from Canada. Lovely.

Those KO roses are the hardiest things ever apparently.

When is your tree going up?

Mama Zen -

I think so, too.

happygirl -

That makes me think of a song that is on an Emmylou Harris CD - "Roses in the Snow."

Riot Kitty -

Oh there is an extravaganza of them in the building next to me. I'll try taking a film.

I'm glad you think so, too. I love those red ones and don't really remember seeing them before.

Could you post some of your fil's artwork? I'd love to see it. How lovely that he left you that legacy.

I'm looking that poem up now. He had such a lyrical way of writing.

John -

Thank you!

Sage -

Thank you and I see those red maple leaves here and there and can never seem to spot the actual tree they fell from. There are many trees around the condos.

And that wee tree is making me so happy - I love plugging the lights in when I get up in the morning.

Snaggle -

That is a great observation - nature is decorating in red, too. I like that.

Love the decorations!!

The roses look amazing, I can't believe they've survived some really cold weather either. Long may they live!

Joe -

Thank you! And we tend to have mild winters here in the south - it may be that the hardiness of the roses combined with generally mild temps are keeping them going.
