Back porch, Harvest moon and treasure

- The back porch had been covered with a fair amount of dead leaves, which I swept off on Saturday.  The plants are getting straggly, but they are still nice and green.  And I splurged ($12 on sale at HomeGoods) on that colorful doormat to change things up a bit.

- Driving home from a dinner with friends on Saturday evening, the gorgeous Harvest moon kept popping into view here and there.  I'm so glad I had it with me for the drive.  My grainy iPhone photo doesn't do it justice at all, but it still makes for a nice memory.

 - Friend Bren brought me this treasure - a "Holding Cross" - back from her trip to the Golden Isles, on the coast of Georgia, last weekend.  It's smooth and fits in the palm of my hand.  I love it.  It was carved by hand by Rev. Dave Hanson, of St. Simons Island, for use as a meditative prayer aid.  I love this printed on the accompanying card, "It is prayerfully carved from natural wood to remind you that you are greatly loved and never alone."  (Romans 8:31-39)  An article I found about him can be read here.

Hi Lynn - lovely mat ... while the moon was hid here! First time for ages - we've had such a warm summer (down here on the south coast). I love those Holding Crosses - I've got the one my mother was given by one of my sisters-in-law ... which I had hanging up for her and which we felt sometimes ...

Cheers Hilary

Lynn, I just 'googled' them on amazon, but your is MUCH MUCH nicer!!! It is more 3-D and fatter with more interesting wood. Of course, yours is hand carved?

Read the article about the Rev. Dave Hanson but cannot find any contact info about the how to's of perhaps, ordering one.

Love that moon. And your 'grainy' photo is better than any moon shot I have managed.
I hope you find comfort with your holding cross on dark days and moments.

Your porch looks inviting and I love the colors on the new mat! My plants are straggly too, but I don't have the heart to pitch them just yet.
I can see why the cross would be nice to hold, so roundy and smooth. Lovely idea!

I too enjoyed that beautiful moon, it was very bright and beautiful! (I saw it in England on Friday night. On the Saturday, the day we left, they were going to have a moonlight stroll along the sea front, in aid of a charity. How I wish I could have been there for that!)
AND I truly love the holding cross! I read the article about the retired pastor, thanks for the link!

Pretty soon I will have to use my back door because the side door will be barricaded with leaves. Shine on Harvest Moon...for me and my...dogs, cats, chickens, guineas. LOL Love the holding cross and want one too.

Love your moon photo! You should see how horrible my pics of the moon turn out. Like a dot that shouldn't be on the photo. lol

Your home is such a sweet haven. I would love to spend hours on your back porch with a pot of tea and a good novel.

As for that cross, I'd love to have one of those. Does he sell them online?

Ileana, Lynn *just* answered my question in regard to this as follows:

I googled the Holding Crosses made in St. Simons Island, GA and found it on facebook - Kave Art. It says you can order them directly from Rev. Hanson at jdavehanson@bellsouth.net

P.S. I always wanted to be Lynn's secretary :-)

Sorry to say that I missed the harvest moon this year (drat). The leaves are still all on the trees here and most are still green. I don't miss not having to rake them as we would do at the VA house. Now we have a lawn maintenance crew doing that until the house gets new owners...one day (we hope). The cross was a lovely gift.
