If it could talk..., a hit and movie weekend

- If this fern could talk, it would say, "I love me some outside!"  It was a rainy warmish weekend in Atlanta.  The fern comes in and out, but stays outdoors on the back porch if the temps are above about 40 degrees f.  It sits on a stool that came from my great aunt's home right now, but in the summer it hangs by my front door.

- Making Spicy Mexican Slaw with Lime and Cilantro for game night with friends on Saturday. Click here for the recipe.  It was a hit and went well with the potluck dinner we always have.  My favorite thing:  red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese icing for dessert.  Yum.

- From the ridiculous to the sublime:  watching two movies on dvd this weekend I've heard a lot about, but just somehow hadn't seen before - Bridesmaids and The King's Speech.  I definitely recommend The King's Speech.  :)

Your fern is gorgeous! I've never had one and you make it sound like they're fairly hardy- taking them in and out like that. Maybe I'll try one on my porch this summer.
This sounds preposterous, but I've also never had a red velvet cupcake! And me with all the baking I do. Maybe I'll need to make this for Valentine's Day.

We had a nursery in Kansas that sold the most beautiful ferns. I would give them as gifts and some still exist today but not the ones I kept for myself. Everyone could keep them healthy but me, though I tried and tried. My thumb is black.

My dad used to all red velvet cake "floor sweep cake". Most people don't understand that. Do you?

Here I go again, having to admit that I am the one in a million who did not like THE KING'S SPEECH. I say that with a guilty look on my face because I am always greeted with jeers for this statement.

Well - it sheds like crazy when it's inside, but other than that it's not a problem. This one came from Walmart originally and I've had it for about three years now. It's gotten pretty big. I water it every day in the summer, but just once a week in the winter. The trick is bringing it inside then it gets too cold out.

Oh - you should make those cupcakes - they are essentially chocolate cake with buttermilk which apparently makes them turn red, or you can add red food coloring. I look forward to your post about them.

Granny Annie -

I'm not particularly good with plants, but I do well with ferns and geraniums.

I have no idea why that would be called floor sweep cake. Do you know?

I enjoyed the historical part the most, but quite liked the whole movie. I do not jeer you, Granny Annie.

Thanks for the movie recommendation. I'm running out of ideas.

As for your fern, wow! I love it!! I'd name it Bob Marley if I were you. It's very cool!

That cole slaw sounds yummy...and I love red velvet cupcakes. Funny, Claire just wrote something about red velvet cupcakes on her blog...I believe she called George Clooney the "red velvet cake of movie stars." :)

What is The King's Speech about, Lynn? I haven't had any urge to see it cos the title makes it sound dull. No?

Your fern, amazing. They do love the humid warmth. I could never keep them alive throughout the mid-Atlantic winter. I love a movie weekend. I watched Catfish and Freakonomics. I'm a sucker for documentaries. Catfish really sucked me in. :)

Bob Marley the fern. Done!

Hmmm - I can imagine why George Clooney would be compared to red velvet cake. :)

There were parts of Bridesmaids that were lol funny, but some of it was gross.

FB -

It's probably dull, but I got very absorbed in it.

From the IMDB: The King's Speech "tells the story of the man who became King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II. After his brother abdicates, George ('Bertie') reluctantly assumes the throne. Plagued by a dreaded stammer and considered unfit to be king, Bertie engages the help of an unorthodox speech therapist named Lionel Logue. Through a set of unexpected techniques, and as a result of an unlikely friendship, Bertie is able to find his voice and boldly lead the country through war."

I think bringing it in and out has been the trick.

I'll check out the two documentaries you mention.

That fern is gorgeous! Looks heavy to haul, though. Yes~ I loved the film "The King's Speech." I just watched it again, recently!

I'm going to have to try that slaw. I bet it would go well on a barbecue sandwich

I wish my fern looked that good! It's dropping everywhere with nasty brown patches. Sounds like my hair.

The Kings Speech was a great film!

That fern is just gorgeous. I have a brown thumb where ferns are concerned though.
Not a fan of cilantro, but that slaw looks pretty good without it. Thanks.

I watched about the last 40 minutes of the film (kind of strange like that) and I thought it was pretty good.

Will probably watch it from the beginning in the near future as the film is currently the movie of choice for overkill on the premium movie channels.

Mama Zen -

Thank you!

It's not that heavy, just a bit cumbersome.

I kept pausing the movie to go do other things, but I did enjoy it.

Sage -

It is so good - the lime juice makes it, I think. I wouldn't have thought to put it on a barbeque sandwich, but I'll bet that would be excellent.

Joe -

I liked it, too.

The Elephant's Child -

People either seem to like cilantro, or they don't. It would probably be good without it.

G -

It was interesting to see the road he took to get there.

I loved The King's Speech - I have passed on Bridesmaids because even the preview looked terrible.

There were some raunchy parts, but some of it was actually funny. I can say I saw it now and what the fuss was all about. :)

What a huge fern! Lucky you have time for the in n out routine. My Boston Ferns stay out on the deck- Very hardy. I want to try those cupcakes- but need to watch out for "Spicy" stuff-
Haven't seen the films- Thanks for the above description that it's about George VI.

I followed you here from .... now where was that? I think it was The Elephant's Child. I love your posts! The one a few back with the old ladies in the plastic caps -well it brings back a memory from my childhood of two ladies in the ocean off Cape Cod, wearing their little shower caps. My mom never laughed so hard. You are entertaining in a variety of ways so I am following!

WOW. I want that fern! I never have luck with plants. I usually have to get what's called the "iron plant" because it really lets you know when it needs water. It kind of collapses on itself, but a quick dose of water makes it reach for the skies again:~)

I haven't seen Bridesmaids, but I really liked The King's Speech:~)

As red velvet cake is my eldest daughter's favorite, I found a low fat recipe for cupcakes when she was visiting in December. They were yummy!

Looking at the fern, it's like watching nature let her hair down. So I suppose the fern is having a might good time.

That is a crazy-huge fern! It looks very happy.

Thanks for the heads up that you enjoyed The King's Speech. I have heard mixed reviews of that movie. I watched Bridesmaids with my sister. It wasn't as awful as I thought it would be, kind of sweet in a way, but I could have done without the gross-out scene.

Lynn said...

Snaggle -

That in and out routine takes all of about 1 minute. :)

Red velvet cake tastes like chocolate cake - so no spiciness there.

Melissa Ann -

Thank you for following and I will check out your blog momentarily. I just write about positive things that happen to me - I'm glad you like it.

Sara -

I'm usually not that good with plants either, so I guess that's why I feel the need to keep this one alive!

Hmmm - I might be interested in that recipe.

Anil -

You make me smile - I like the thought of nature letting her hair down. :)

Sparkling Red -

I think it's happy. :)

And oh my, that gross out scene in Bridesmaids. I thought that would never be over.

Totally jealous of your gorgeous fern, Lynn! :)

I talk about it all the time, so it seemed like a good thing to post. :)

I SO want to see The King's Speech, always have.

We recently saw a kids' movie "We Bought A Zoo" but I HIGHLY recommend it for grown-ups too.

Glorious fern Lynn, So glad it gets a little deck "vacation" when the temps are nice. I bet that fern just LOVES you to bits!!

Betty -

I was kind of late in viewing that film, but it finally rose to the top of my Netflix queue.

Jannie -

I hope it loves me to bits. I didn't realize it was going to dip below 40 last night - it got down to 35 or so. There was frost on my windshield, but the fern should be OK since it was under cover. We've been through so much together it would be a shame if it died now! :)
