Queensboro Bridge, wild promise and first glimpse

- It's Random Photo Thursday. (I just made that up. Ha!) I took this photo on a Saturday morning in December of the Queensboro Bridge in New York City from the Mobil Station. I like that it has its own song "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)" by Simon and Garfunkel. I've spotted it on TV and movies since then.

- In F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel "The Great Gatsby", Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway cross the bridge on their way from Long Island to Manhattan. "The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge," Nick says, "is always the city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of all the mystery and the beauty in the world."

- It was my first trip to New York City, and the drive into Midtown Manhattan was as Nick describes - only this time it was over the Triboro Bridge. The cab driver said, "We'll take the Triboro Bridge because of so much traffic, OK?" Uh - OK. My niece was delighted that I had this first view of the city at night, so full of life, mystery and wild promise.

Did you hear that the Gatsby mansion from the movie is going to be demolished? I just can't get over it!

Every bridge should have its own song.

Cities at night are always extra exciting and full of life.

What's that box hanging up there on a wire...it looks a bit like a ski lift!

Lynn! Oooooh nooooo. We are 'supposed' to get 4 inches of snow here later as the temp drops.
What???!

My own little theme post. :)

Mama Zen -

I had not heard that. I remember Gatsby standing at the edge of his property staring across at the water, know she is there. A beautiful scene in the film.

It's been raining so much, there haven't been many photo ops, so random it is. :)

Ellis -

That morning I looked at her apartment building using Google Earth. She told me exactly where to get out and there was the red awning I had seen on the internet that morning. New York is so exciting - I loved it.

Joe -

A good plan for all bridges!

It's some kind of shuttle tram trolley. I'd love to ride in it sometime.

Yes - it is hitting the freezing mark here tonight. I'm sorry you are getting more snow - I imagine you are tired of it.

The mere mention of Simon and Garfunkel brings a tear to my eye, it really does. The one cassette I listened to from about 1982 to 1984 was The Concert In Central Park. Yep, just that one album!

Oooo, wild promise -- I wanna live my life that way. (And kinda do!!) :)

I've been to NYNY only a couple times. Ain't nothin' like it, eh?

xoxo

I loved it when they sang at the Grammy awards a few years ago. I've always loved them.

And I think you do live with wild promise - I like that.

xo

It might just be time to reread that - I loved it, too.

I mainly needed a device to explain posting an old photo. :)

It must feel Groovy to have been there at the 59th St Bridge! I haven't- but used to play the tune alot years ago.
It must be nice to know your way around NY, even in films. Mostly I've just driven thru- in '01. I hear the Parkway is flooded today from rain.
Sorry I'm late reading-
