- It is such fun opening the mailbox and finding an unexpected gift. My dear friend and co-blogger,
Granny Annie, sent me this wonderful antique postcard (circa 1913). The message is perfect!
"All of us wish for you, all the good things we can think of. If perchance, we have forgotten anything worth having we hope you will get that as well." I wish the same for you, Annie, and all my friends who come here.
- The card was addressed to Mr. William D. Hartman of Montandon, Pennsylvania with the message:
"just a card to let you know that I have not forgot the old Guard, your old Bunkin (Bunkie?)" Wm Davidson, Drum Major, Band 19th Inf. (Click to enlarge.) I think they must have been in the US Army together, in the years just before the United States entered World War I. Lovely that this postcard survived all these years and even lovelier that it is mine now. A treasure!
- Thank you for all the concern for me and my city. We have gotten back to normal a bit and most all of the abandoned cars I saw on the sides of the expressway yesterday have been collected (or moved somewhere else.) I caught up on my sleep and cooked an awful lot - there will be chili and baked ziti for lunches for days. :)

I'm glad things are settling down for you there! I had no idea, when i commented on your post a few days ago, how bad it really was in Atlanta. Then saw the Weather Channel, and started hearing stories of 18 hour commutes! How could this happen? Officials must have known snow was coming. Didn't they?

I guess (in all fairness), the snow was originally predicted to be south of the Metro Atlanta area, but the National Weather Service announced a weather advisory for Metro Atlanta and above at 3:30am Tuesday morning. So yes - they knew. They should have closed schools for that day. I was so fortunate to be on the road home before 80% of other drivers, especially after hearing the nightmare stories of others, who were 24 hours or more getting home. My friend Marybeth slept in her car on I-285 all night and finally made it home sometime on Wednesday.
We deal with snow as much as twelve to fourteen inches, but that is almost like routine every year. It must have been frightening to be surprised like that in Atlanta. I hope that every one is safe and got hold of their cars.

What a week you all had! Oh my! The entire nation was watching your plight, too! It sounds odd to hear you say you have to go get the ice off of your car! I love old postcards as well! Two wonderful gifts, Lynn. Hope your weekend is a relief for you! I'm just glad that you weren't tied up in that knot!

That postcard is adorable! I love getting a glimpse of the past as it was experienced when it was the present. Sometimes I try to imagine how people 50 or 100 years from now will see today, when it has become history. "Back in the days when we still drove land cars and had to buy our food in stores..."
