- Since there was a bit of discussion of new year traditions on the blogs this weekend, I thought I would show you my black eyed pea stew. The peas are supposed to represent coins and the collard greens represent green money. The tradition goes that eating these items on the new year brings the promise of prosperity in the months to come. I just like that I know what I'll be eating on that day. :)
- This handy gadget was in my Christmas stocking. It hangs from the cabinet handle and you can clip a recipe on to it for easy viewing during meal prep. Small things like this always end up being my favorite present.
- Friend Alice made this carrot cake for friend Kim's birthday. She arrived with the cake telling about its imperfections, but it was delicious and charming with its array of candles.

You and I are posting early this morning. Looks like I get to be first commenter on your blog too:)
The blackeyed pea stew looks great. We just make sure we have blackeyed peas and ham on New Years Day. Did you read Lulu's post about traditional yellow underwear for New Years?
I desperately need one of those recipe clips and will begin the search.
Like many, I have started a diet to welcome 2011 so the carrot cake is a dangerous site to behold. It does look delicious however.
A cake that was bad
but was quite grand
A thing-of-a-magigy that keep
recipes out from under hand
and a black eyed pea stew
that would put more
black eyed peas in your pan
That stew looks YUM.
That recipe holder is a great idea!
Not fair! You have me craving both sweet and savoury this morning! :)
Now I want carrot cake, despite the fact that I am never hungry in the morning!

Yes - I blog between 5am and 6am with side trips for coffee and such.
And I did see that post about the yellow underwear - might just do that next year. :)
I went back and added a link for how to order that recipe holder.
And I am feeling nibbly this morning - missing my chocolate, etc.

Good job spelling "thing-of-a-magigy" - love that poem!

It was pretty yummy. I still have most of it. :)

I know. I love food - it's hard not to write about it. :)

This carrot cake was just about the best I had ever had.
That's far too green for this carnivore's liking
I may have to try that stew if I can find collards up here... We normally ate our collards and peas separate! Happy New Year.
Cool idea for hanging up your recipes. Not so cool if they are in a cookery book though!
That cake looks perfect and HOT! Lots of candles on there! :)
The blackeyed pea stew looks yummy. I'll have to make some while wearing yellow (or red) undies next year for even better luck! lol
The recipe clip is awesome! What a great gift. This way the pages never get dirty. Love it!!
Well, I could sure use more prosperity this year! I've never had that meal before! Looks very good- The recipe clip looks like a fabulous gadget. Do always like carrot cake- n good for you too, so the calories are forgivable, right? I also hear it's not too fattening...

Come on now - a little green is OK. :)

This is kind of a cousin to Hoppin' John - the rice and peas dish most people make and then they put their greens on the side.
The recipe actually calls for mustard greens - not sure if they are indigenous to the north either. Or you could put kale.
Joe -
Yes - in that case it couldn't be used.

I am totally wearing yellow underwear at midnight next year. :) Loved that grape eating tradition, too.
Snaggle -
I wish I could send you some prosperity. Here's to that for the coming year.
Extra-Lovely pix!
That dish looks and sounds hearty and healthy. Delicious too.
Do you celebrate pancake day? Shrove Tuesday, is that? Coins and such are put in pancakes with different meanings, as you most likely already know.
Your spice rack looks so awesome, all decorator touch, and all.

Jannie -
Thanks friend! And I don't know much about Shrove Tuesday - I wonder if that would have been yesterday.
