- My sisters and I tried to remember the words to the Over the River and through the Woods song once - a song we associate with Thanksgiving. This is all we remembered, so we sang this first verse a couple of times and ended with "Hey!":
Over the river and through the woods
To Grandmother's house we go,
The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh
Through the white and drifted snow...
The rest of the lyrics can be found here (I just looked it up.) Turns out a woman named Lydia Maria Child wrote this in 1844, based on memories of visiting her Grandmother's house, which still stands near the Mystic River in Medford, Massachusetts. It has been restored by Tufts University.
- All three sisters (two of them grandmothers), who live in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, Atlanta, Georgia and the rolling "red hills" farmland of northern Florida, will be together this year for Thanksgiving. The Florida sister called me last evening about the menu and later texted me, thanking me for "talking her off the ledge." She is nervous about being in charge of the dinner, but I reminded her that we all like to cook, so we'll make it fun and remember that the most important thing is being together.

We sang it to the top of our lungs and paused with "hey" then sang the same refrain over and over. Who needed all the words. lol The main thing was that we were on the way to GRANDMA'S!!! WooHoo!!!
My kids won't sing that this year because I'll be singing "to my daughter's house I go" and can't wait. Just hoping it won't be through white and drifting snow! Yikes.

This made me laugh, Lynn. My little sister and I were talking each other off the ledge just last night. We two sisters try to handle most of the Thanksgiving prep these days. This year, however, is our first year to deal with my celiac disease, and we're scrambling to figure out what I can eat!
That IS true! Being together is what matters. And I bet it will be one of your best dinners ever. Sounds like all you cooks will make it happen.
That song plays on the miniature Thanksgiving table Kelly has with her Fisher Price doll house. The table top actually flips, alternating between a birthday setting with song, and the Thanksgiving one. With candles that light up! She no longer plays with it, but I like to know both those little battery-operated tunes are available at a moment's notice should I ever want to hear them.
