- Here is the sandwich from lunch yesterday (I've had this for lunch every day for a week.) So good! I never get tired of this, while home-grown tomatoes are in season. It is tradition in the south to make a tomato sandwich with white bread, mayo and salt. I like Duke's mayonnaise, but do use fresh, whole wheat bread for myself.
Read this ode to the tomato, if you have time, titled, "One Tomato, Two Tomato" by Virginia Willis. Click on the red link. She calls the tomato sandwich "cheap and cheerful." A perfect description.

Mmmmm, summertime tomato sandwiches are the best! I like mine toasted though.

what more could one do
toss in some pickles
crisp bacon or two
a little lettuce

"Cheap and cheerful", is very much used in England!
And you are correct, there is nothing better for a summer time lunch than a tomato sandwich, nothing!
Hi Lynn - what a fantastic looking sandwich ... and yes fresh tomatoes are so delicious ... I'm not good with bread - but on occasions I totally agree with you ... I must get out to the farm shop ... looks too delicious ... cheers Hilary
Oh- that tomato!! It's only breakfast time here, but you have me craving a tomato sandwich! It's so wonderful how folks share their garden bounty.
My favorite summer treat...tomato sandwiches. My neighbors keep me stocked with fresh tomatoes from their garden. No sense even thinking about making one from a store bought tomato. Must be fresh. Yum, yum, yum...
Beautiful- still awaiting my first beefstake ones off the wilted bush container one. If it lives! So dry n hot here now.
If it wasn't 11 pm, I'd make myself a tomato sandwich...and blame you! :)
I have to be honest and say I'm not a fan of tomato sandwiches. Mind you I don't often eat fresh tomatoes so maybe I'm missing out on a taste sensation! I think our neighbours grow their own, maybe I need to hint. :D
Having lived in the South for 12 years before moving to NH, we know about the tomato sandwich and you are so right about the description, including the Duke's mayo. We just had a 'mater sandwich yesterday for lunch as we are in VA this week.
