It's so amazing that it is the first of November and that hosta is in full bloom now. I can't bring myself to get rid of the blooming things yet (as my neighbor has done). Recommendation for all of you who can find them - Dragon Wing Begonias, probably the hardiest blooming plant ever. (It's the one on the table there.) The red link is to a website that calls them "proven winners."
The view from the trash compactor area at the condos, last Sunday morning. I don't think I've ever taken photos of our changing leaves from this view before. I turned back to car and marveled at the serenity and beauty of the morning.
It all started when I promised a friend that I would send him my sister's recipe for Red Cabbage. "Oh yeah - her red cabbage is great! I'll send the recipe to you." And then I couldn't find it. So I texted her yesterday morning to ask her to send it. She hadn't thought of or made it in years, but a few minutes later, I got a "Found it!" text with this photo of the recipe card. It was her late mother-in-law's recipe*. Her husband asked if she would make it soon, so she did - she made it for dinner last night.
She served it with pork roast and potatoes. And I got a text from her while I was at volunteer work last night and still contemplating dinner, "Wish you were here! Thanks for the reminder!" Me, too. They live in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia - I don't see them nearly enough, but I love that we are in touch all the time like this.
* If you make this, fat would be butter (I asked) and vinegar is the apple cider variety. :)

Hi Lynn - wonderful to have the recipe the family knows works for them ... great your sister has the original .. and thanks for putting up the recipe here ... I love red cabbage and don't get it nearly enough ... and oddly enough it's not been a family recipe ... a cousin makes it - but we've never done ... still enjoy and all the pumpkin recipes around .. cheers Hilary
Red cabbage is...the bomb. German's eat it with spaetzle (and sausage!) Glad to see your post, Lynn! it's a very easy crock-pot dish with sausage 'thrown in' with it. :-)

The red cabbage does look good. I've eaten it a few times and do really like it, and that's coming from someone who isn't a great fan of vegetables. :D
Yum. I am a huge red cabbage fan. Any cabbage really. Except their small cousins. My mother told me I couldn't be a vegetarian because I don't like brussel sprouts. She was wrong. And her habit of cooking them till they were tired and grey may be part of the reason I don't eat them now.
It's ages since I've seen (or made) this recipe, too. I might just have to buy a red cabbage and make some. I've got a green cabbage in fridge...I like doing them with chopped onion, garlic, vinegar, salt and cracked pepper...with just the tiniest dash of water (the water that's left from washing the cabbage.) Let it stand for an hour or two before cooking. Best not cooked too long..leaving a little crunchiness still.

Oh "No!!!" Lynn! Oh dear. I'm so sorry that you missed it! Yeah, they just went ahead and scored to finish it out...and then held at the bottom of the 10th. It was GREAT.
Bill Murray and the team players were outrageous to watch in the club house, after. The announcers/commentators were filled with joy, too. It was a hoot! A real stitch to watch!!! ;-)

Thanks for stopping by, dear Lynn.....I haven't been on my computer for over a week. My energy for it all is just not there these days.
