Outside, rescue and conservationist

- So yesterday was “Take Your Houseplant for a Walk” day. According to "Chase's Calendar of Events," it is a day created to promote the awareness of how to care for houseplants. It also encourages people to take their houseplants outside so they can get to know their environment.

- The rescue plant above, commonly known as a philodendron (right?), was rescued by green thumb neighbor Bonnie who saw it in a pile of rubbish from someone vacating an office at her workplace. So this houseplant found a home in a new pot on my back porch. It will get to stay outside until October or so.

- According to Chase's, today is the birthday of Beatrix Potter, noted conservationist and author of the Peter Rabbit books. When she died in 1943, Beatrix Potter left 4000 acres of land in the Lake District in England to The National Trust. I so love the story of how she gave this gift to help preserve it for future generations. Check out the film "Miss Potter" if you haven't seen it.

I saw Miss Potter, and other than her strange way of talking, I loved the movie.

"Take your houseplant for a walk" day made me giggle. It'd be funny to see the neighbor's reactions.

Jewel -

I loved the parts in which Miss Potter's drawings came briefly to life - blink and you'd miss it.

Yes - I should put it in a wagon and pull it around the neighborhood - I could bond with the dog walkers!

I can see the different plants having attitude. Like the exotic plants are worried about the weather("Is it windy? I don't want my blooms getting mussed!") and the vines dragging their feet and dawdling.

I'm the one who's always rescuing plants at the garden centre. Show me a plant that's looking sad and neglected and I simply have to bring it home. They have been some of the most beautiful in the garden.

I think Beatrix's illustrations are some of the most charming ever. I grew up with Peter Rabbit.

That is so funny! Good imagery. Hopefully for the exotic ones, they never come live with me. I am not especially good with plants. Bonnie entrusted me with this one because her tastes do run a bit more to the exotic - she has exquisite foliage around her place.

I love the Potter books, too!

I don't know why but we've always called that a golden pothos ivy.

?

Plants are people too! They need outings just like the rest of us.

That is what Bonnie called it! I just couldn't remember. Golden pothos ivy. Got it.

I have this huge Xmas Cactus that would be pretty tough to walk around outside with... had to switch rooms last week so I guesss a short walk is better than none!

Your plant looks healthy!

I too remember the humanized, sophisticated, rabbits with clothes of Bea Potter fondly from my early library days.

My plant seems to like it out on the porch. Your Christmas cactus sounds lovely - do you ever keep it in the dark so it blooms at Christmas? (I think I saw that on The Waltons once.) :)

My favorite part of Miss Potter (the movie) is when the Peter Rabbit characters come briefly to life - blink and you'd miss it.
