Black Walnut tree, leg lamp and 10/11/12

- An Eastern Black Walnut tree arches above my sister's house in the mountains - the walnuts can be seen above.  They look a bit like green tennis balls and sound like that when they fall onto the house.  It startles me every time.  I liked this photo for the ethereal quality of it - taken on a rainy Sunday.

- My cousin Sam posted this on facebook, so I just had to share.  He got a "frag-eel-ay" lamp* like the one Ralphie's dad won as a prize.  Wonder how long before that gets relegated to the man room?   :)  *From my favorite Christmas movie, "A Christmas Story."  You can buy your own Major Award Leg Lamp here.

- And of course I loved writing 10/11/12 all day yesterday.  It turned out to be a pleasant day, so maybe that had something to do with it.  :)

Have a wonderful weekend, y'all!

Hi Lynn - never seen a black walnut tree before .. but I lie!!! I saw one at the British Museum in the Kew Gardens planting of the North American Landscape! I can imagine those plops onto the house would be a little earth shattering ...

The leg lamp looks 'interesting' ... and of course here in the UK we'd have not been writing that ... but 11.10.12 .... ours will come next month on 10th November!

Cheers Hilary

"A Christmas Story" cracks me up every time I watch it.
I hear the Black Walnuts falling on our neighbors tin barn roof. Those things would hurt if you got hit with one!

I too keep thinking about how neat it was to write 10-11-12 as I signed stuff. Walnuts are delicious and I love the tree and the wood, but boy do they make a mess.

Hilary -

That's so interesting about that exhibit at the British Museum. I read that Native Americans used to seek out the Black Walnuts for their cooking. The interesting thing is that on my sister's property and the adjacent property, they have discovered some purposely bent trees that they used as markers in their travels.

That's true - I hadn't thought of the difference in dates. They funniest thing - I should have turned the card over on my calendar so that it read Thursday, not Wednesday. :) I'm so glad today is Friday and not Thursday - it's been a week.

Cheers!

Leonora -

I love how TBS has it looped to run all day on Christmas Day. Last year when I arrived at the farm with my mother on Christmas Eve, we had to sit in the car because their large dog and two large guests' dogs were running around and around my car barking. I laughed and told my mom they reminded me of the Bumpus's dogs. :)

Yes - I realized that as I was standing under the walnuts taking that shot. That would have smarted if they fell on my head.

Sage -

They do make a mess - the squirrels tackle opening them and leave the remnants around, too.

The black-on-grey photo is gorgeous. If you could print that on fabric I bet some fashion designer could work wonders with it.

Ah, the good old leg lamp. I saw a photo of someone who had made a leg lamp Hallowe'en costume thusly: Lampshade skirt, fishnet stocking and high heel on one leg, and black everywhere else.

I like the tree but walnuts are not my favorite nuts.

10-11-12 that is cool!

That is a simply gorgeous tree. We too would have written that date as 11.10.2012 - but now I know I have something to look forward to next month. Thank you - and have a great weekend.

We love black walnuts and can never find them in this area. They are most delicious in fudge and banana bread.

Our forever family warning is "You'll shoot your eye out". Love A Christmas Story and certainly would display that lamp.

Never wrote the date yesterday and did not realize it was 10/11/12. Now I am sad.

Beautiful branch pic composition. What a funny looking lamp! Now I'm imagining poor one-legged mannequins trying to model clothes!
Thanks for bringing the Date number sync to my attention. I didn't write the date all day n forget the fun of it sometimes. Have a fun Week-end.

I haven't ever seen a leg lamp like that before! Very cool.

Thank you - it did come out looking like a black and white photo. It was an rainy / overcast day.

That sounds like a great idea for a costume.

Sandie -

I think it's hard to get at the meat of those walnuts - hard as the squirrels try.

The Elephant's Child -

And may it be a special day for you, my friend!

My cousin Sam has completed barber school (of all things) and has a barber shop in a little house on their property - I suspect that lamp is going there. Yes - that's a great phrase. Love that movie, too.

Snaggle -

Watch The Christmas Story if you've never seen it - it's on all day Christmas day.

Joanne -

Then you need to see that movie - please watch it. So funny and wonderful.

That leg lamp is so hilarious. I can't imagine where I'd put that thing!

The first photo is just beautiful. I know of an artist who would do a fine job drawing that beautiful tree in charcoal.

10/11/12 was my dad's birthday! We were both very amused, and the younger sibs didn't understand why - probably that we are just easily amused :)

My brother bought my dad a leg lamp for Christmas one year. My stepmom wasn't too hot on it and it lives in the garage.

Definitely looking forward to the TBS marathon this year.

"What? No Blue Diamond Walnuts? We go now!"

(first thing that popped into my head about the walnut tree was an old Blue Diamond Walnut commercial)

Scarlet -

I had no idea it would come out like that - really stark due to the rainy day.

Riot Kitty -

The operations manager where I work said she's a such a numbers geek that she loved the number line up of that day - I agreed. :)

G -

That's funny - I don't remember that commercial.

Love the walnut tree shot!

I'm not totally convinced by the lamp but then I'm not really into anything girly like that. :D

A couple hang over the path to the chicken coop. I've started wondering if I should be wearing a hardhat when I let the chickens out in the morning.Online Plant Nursery
