Eventful travel, sight seeing and monumental

- The plane my sister and I were on after it made an emergency landing in Norfolk, Virginia last Thursday afternoon, due to a hydraulic leak that might have affected the landing gear, but didn't (thankfully.)  There was no other plane available, so all passengers were put on buses and driven to Dulles airport in the Washington, DC suburbs, where we rented a car at 11:30pm for the rest of our journey.  My sister and I decided it would give us a story to talk about forever and it was wonderful to have our other sister and brother-in-law waiting for us on their front lawn at 1:30am when we finally made it there.

- On Friday, there was a little family visit in Washington, DC with niece and her husband + adorable 3.5 year-old great niece.  And there was some sightseeing.  This monument honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is beautiful and inspiring.

- The Washington Monument was damaged during an earthquake in August 2011 and so is undergoing renovation and repair for cracks.  Michael Graves designed the curtain-like scrim that surrounds the monument while this is going on and it is lit at night with 488 glowing lamps.

I knew we were almost to their house when we passed Dinosaur Land.  :)  More photos on Friday.

A long day/night for you and your sister, Lynn...but thankfully you arrived safely to your destination.

Standing in front of the monument honouring Martin Luther King Jr would certainly be an awesome moment, in the true sense of the word "awesome".

oooo great pics! Sorry you had to be bused after paying for a faster ride! A fire at the Logan (Boston) fuel station may have tied up the planes on the Eastern Seaboard a bit...
Can't believe your little niece is 3.5 already! Glad you got to see her again. n Her parents- The monument looks strange with the scrim on it- Thanks for the little tour!
So Glad you are safe!

I am so glad that the trip wasn't any more eventful, that you landed safely and had a good time.
Love that monument.

That's definitely a new way to get from point A to point B. Sort of like Billy from the "Family Circus".

Blimey that was scary, I'm glad the plane was okay, and you and your sister as well. With all the flying I do, I've never had an issue with a plane, but I know they'll be a first time.

Love the Martin Luther King monument. Looks amazing.

It was cool! And I saw the necklace on your blog. I sure enjoyed my blog giveaway - I'm glad you did, too.

We did arrive safely and that's all that matters.

I was totally surprised by its location. Niece lives in DC right now and knew just where to park to get to the WWII memorial and we encountered this awesome monument to Dr. King on the way.

Snaggle -

And there was also a lightning strike at the Baltimore airport which meant that the Norfolk airport was full of Baltimore passengers, too.

I know - Mina is fun and a hand full!

Thank you -

Elephant's Child -

I had a wonderful time.

One more today!

Joe -

The funny thing is - I fly a fair amount and the only other time I had a plane issue was when I was with her.

Hilary -

Yes - I am definitely glad we were safe. You are right.
