George, Master Clock and good answer

- We passed this statue when I was with my niece and sisters in the car on the way to lunch in Washington, DC on September 13.  I asked who the statue depicts and my niece replied, "George Washington."  That made sense since it is near the entrance to George Washington University.  On the way back from lunch, we were sitting beside it in traffic and I asked her to snap a photo out of the car window with my camera.  A Google search says, "A bronze statue of George Washington stands at the north entrance of the University Yard, just past the rose garden.  The statue is a cast of the 18th-century marble original by French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon."  I like how the artist gave our first president such a dapper look.

- Niece and her husband live in Glover Park in DC.  (For about another week and then they are moving to Turkey.)  Glover Park is home to the Naval Observatory and the Vice President of the United State's home.  Every morning and evening, Glover Park residents can hear the Naval Observatory play the sounding of colors synchronized to the nation's Master Clock.

- Niece and her husband are parents to 3.5 year old Mina, who you have heard about before.  She has such smart and funny parents, that she is smart and funny herself.  Those of you in the states may be familiar with the TV commercials in which a man talks to a circle of children and asks discerning questions.  (It advertises for AT&T.)  One question of late:  "So what's better, fast or slow?"  A link to that amusing TV commercial can be found here.  When niece and her husband asked Mina, "Is it better to be fast or slow?"  She replied, "It's better to be happy."

The last line made laugh out loud. What a wise child Mina is:~)

So, they're all moving to Turkey. OMG I bet you're going to miss them.

I know I've said this before, but my eldest daughter lives in London. While I know she loves living there, phone calls sometimes just don't cut it.

Fortunately, JC and I have been able to visit her and she's coming for a visit this Thanksgiving.

Tell Mina thanks for the words of wisdom and the laugh:~)

Yes, it's ALWAYS better to be happy, than anything else. And the wise ones say we always can be!

I wonder who's house has the better menu and chef, the Vice President's or The President's? Still waiting for an invitation to dinner for both! :) I bet they just feast at every meal! Actually thinking of getting my own personal chef here. I wish! :)

What a wonderful answer from obviously a wonderful little girl. And, of course, she must have equally wonderful parents. :)

What a move...to Turkey! What will they be doing there? Such a change; such an adventure! No weekend visits! ;)

Great post...thanks.

Mina is a young genius!

Turkey~! Wow. Do you get to go visit?

George does look rather dapper, despite the funny hair.

First of all, I ADORE those AT&T commercials!! They make my day.

And Mina sounds so adorable!! Way smarter than any of those commercial kids.

I'd love to bronze a life sized person... (I'm guilty of painting him).

Mina's a very smart girl!

Sara -

She is so wise. I had not seen her since my mom's funeral in early 2012 and this was the main reason for the trip - to be with family, but also to see Mina and her parents before they go away for a while.

Mina is my sister's only grandchild and so I think they will be on Skype a lot.

I'm so glad you will get to see your daughter for Thanksgiving! And I'll pass your thanks on to Mina. :)

Elephant's Child -

Indeed. :)

Jannie -

I like that - yes, always better. Hmmm - which meal would be better - they've got all those veggies over at the White House, so it's a toss up.

Her parents are wonderful. Her mother used to work for the National Trust in Washington and that's where she met her husband, who works for the Turkish government (and currently at the Turkish embassy in DC.) We love him. They'll be back in Turkey for a couple of years and then on to another embassy elsewhere.

Riot Kitty -

I imagine George posing for that statue. :)

I'd like to go to Turkey and have been invited, so we'll see if there is $$$ that will surface for that.

Joanne -

Yes - a good reason not to FF through commercials. :) And thanks.

Bronzing a life sized person - interesting thought.

I hope you get to visit your niece in Turkey!

She sure is right too. Kids have a way of hitting the nail right on the head, shame adults complicate things.

Sage -

I'd like to - they live in Ankara when they are over there, but he has a sister in Istanbul and there is lots of travel opportunity around there, too.

Joe -

Too right.
