Home spot, shake and big bands

- A mid-week trip to this hospital in Macon, Georgia to be with my dad who is back in again.* He offered up this startling fact last time we were here: The entrance to this hospital is on the spot in which he lived with his parents in their family home when he was a teenager. The house was eventually torn down to make way for the hospital.

- It always makes male medical staff smile when they tell him their name and he offers his hand for a shake, even when he is woozy.

- Later I find a program on GPB-TV (Georgia Public Broadcasting) that has clips of bands from the Big Band era. Mom and Dad especially love The Glenn Miller Orchestra, so I check to see if he is awake by singing along with "I've Got a Gal in Kalamazoo." A great song and fun to sing, but I am not known for my singing and it is a good test because it makes him smile.

* Dad had a medical procedure yesterday, and was resting comfortably when sis and I switched caregiving shifts last night.

My father loves the Big Band era. Glen Miller, Count Basie, Ted Heath etc.

My mother isn't into music. As I wasn't from her womb, it doesn't really surprise me.

Best recovery wishes for your dad! So, question: do you travel with a camera, or a cell phone that just takes good pictures?

Joe -

New avatar! I like it. Our dads must be from the same era - the Greatest Generation, as they say. I took mom and dad to see The New Glenn Miller Orchestra a couple of years ago. It was fabulous.

Thank you! I travel with a digital camera - the Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS - it's always in the bottom of my purse. I am sure it will do a lot more than I've had time to figure out. I'm just a point and shoot sort.

I don't know how old your dad is but I am 65 and loved loved loved the big band music. It is soothing and cause for smiles. I dressed up in heels to go "out" and my date did also. Everyone would have fainted if someone would have come in jeans and t-shirts. Big band music is healing to be sure.

My comment a minute ago was hilarious. My date did NOT dress up in heels. I guess I had better proof read in the future.

Hope that your dad is feeling better and out of the hospital soon!

How nice of you to stop by. Dad loves any kind of music with horns. But the big band music is his favorite. And hopefully was healing. :)

Mama Zen -

I think he'll be out tomorrow. Thank you.

I love big band music because of my Mom's love and Glenn Miller is one my favs. There's joy in his music. I'm glad you made your Dad smile :)

Isn't it interesting the circles within circles we encounter in life...your Dad being back in a childhood home in a whole new way.

A little startling when he told me that. I've been singing that Kalamazoo song all day. :) I'm glad you and yours like Big Band music, too.

The first of the 3 reminds me that when I was a teen my Aunt and Uncle rented an apartment in what had been the maternity ward of the old hospital in my home town. Yep! My brothers and I were born in one of the rooms they lived in. Renovated, of course!

That is so sweet, to do your wakefulness check that way :) Glad your dad is doing okay. You are a joy to him, I am sure.

It is startling, to realize what used to be, not so very long ago, either.

Lynn,
I hope your father is doing well.

I used to live in Kalamazoo - back in the mid-'90s!!!

Wow, he lived right there? At least your Father's mind n manners are still intact! Hope he's feeling better now, n you're not losing too much sleep!
I just said an extra prayer for him.
Good for you, knowing the words!

I loved the Glenn Miller orchestra. It was way before my time, but that music is timeless.

I'm happy to hear your dad is doing well. :)

The circle of life, for sure. xo

Meredith -

He is a joy to me and I feel very protective of he and mom.

Lance -

And did you have a gal, who is a real pipperoo? I love the lyrics to that song. How fun music can be.

Snaggle -

Thank you for your prayers - that means so much to me. He went home from the hospital last night and thankfully, not back to the rehab center. We decided that the assisted living place with mom is the best place for his recovery and someone will come in to do physical therapy. I did lose a little sleep, but caught back up last night - in bed by 9pm. :)

Jamie -

Thank you. It's good to see you here!
