Standing sentinel, banner day and rutabagas

- A recent New York Times Sunday Book Review featured a cover review of Danielle Trussoni's new novel "Angelology" and the review makes certain that a line is drawn between what this book is about - bad and "fallen" angels - and the angels that most associate with good. When I read the first paragraph about collectible angels that appeared everywhere in the '90s, my mind flashed to my (tasteful) collection of angels. This angel bear stands sentinel over the washing of pots and making of coffee. (And I was intrigued enough by the review that I might just read that book.)

- It rained all day yesterday, but it was the first day without a coat needed outside. A banner day indeed.

- Later at church dinner, a springy meal of ham, scalloped potatoes and rutabagas. As I am getting my drink, a young man behind me says, "Does the word rutabaga end in an "A?" I nod and he explains that he asks because of our southern practice of dropping the "R"s at the end of words.

Just out of curiosity, how many times does Angel Bear take a swim? I am too clumsy to perch a knick-knack near my sink.

Granny Annie -

All the time! That is why no rings are ever put in his tray holder. :) I think that is what that was meant for.

I love meals with springs on them!

Ah, I was all set to say Angel Bear would make a good beer holder until you confirmed Granny Annie's fear that he takes plenty a dive.

The angel bear has the sweetest expression on his face!

It sucks that the first day without a coat required an umbrella - hope the sun is shining today!

Rutabaga sounds much nicer than turnip (which is what we usually call them here).

Not quite big enough to hold a beer. :) He sure would take a dive then! xo

I think he does, too. I looked up rutabaga and it is a yellow turnip. (?) I'll have to study them at the farmers' market next time I go.

Isn't it funny when you hear another person's perception of your accent? I suddenly can't think of a single word where we drop the "r".

Turnips and rutabagas are not grown in our kitchen garden -- because I don't like them. But the ham and scalloped potatoes sounds lovely. :)

Ah, no coat! For sure a moment of import in the turning of the year...

My mother has the loveliest Southern accent and she drops her r's. "Over there" sounds like "ovah theyah." Lovely, I think. :)

I kind of liked the rutabagas. They were a lovely orangey color. Although I can't imagine that I would want to grow them because they weren't as good as say, basil or a tomato. Ahhh - Caprese salad - can't you just taste it?

What a cute angel bear! Does he hold a scrubby for you?
I have many angels here, recently two Stained glass type ornamentals, Glitter ones I made on plastic CD "Cookies" years ago, n a box of my Nanny's mantle porcelain musician angels in the backroom (treasues). She must've saved a million grocery stamps to collect them! I want that book too-
Warmth is always great after the cold- Was still below freezing last night here-
Don't believe I've ever tried a rutabaga. Sounds interesting-

Riot Kitty -

AND how to pronounce them. :)

The bear's tray is just big enough to hold a ring. Yes - angel art was a big thing a few years back - I have quite a collection.
